Royal Quinoa Black is a variety of Royal Quinoa. The main difference is the color, the nutritional aspect is very similar to the White, that is one of the world’s most popular and healthiest foods. It is gluten-free, high in protein and one of the few foods that contains all nine essential amino acids that can only be obtained from food. Royal Quinoa quickly earned the title of “super grain” of the future. Royal Quinoa is also high in other nutrients like fiber, Magnesium, Iron, potassium, B-Vitamins, Calcium, Phosphorus, Vitamin E and many antioxidants. It is already one of the products that is onboard the international space station because it provides great nutritional value to astronaut’s diets.

Royal Quinoa is a “pseudo-grain” or a gluten and wheat free seed, but typically used as a grain. Royal Quinoa is a relative of leafy green vegetables like spinach and Swiss chard. Rich in many nutrients, Royal Quinoa is a great source of protein and fiber for those following a gluten free, vegan or vegetarian diet.

Royal Quinoa Vs Quinoa

Royal Quinoa is only grown at 12,000 feet above sea level in the areas surrounding the “Salar de Uyuni” in the “Altiplano Boliviano”, a high plateau in Southwest Bolivia in South America. This region was a giant prehistoric lake 30,000 to 42,000 years ago: Lake Minchin. This, and the intense seasonality create a unique microclimate that yields an incredibly durable crop, a larger, rounder seed, that tastes nuttier and is fluffier when cooked than the regular Quinoa. It is the “Champagne of Quinoa”.

Saponin in Royal Quinoa

Saponin is a naturally chemical that coats every tiny grain of quinoa. It wards off insects but it has a strong, unpleasant taste. The removal of saponin requires a delicate balanced method because you do not want to remove the nutrients that are underneath the saponin.

We have a unique process of removing the saponin completely while preserving all the nutrients. It is a two step process. The first part is to remove the saponin in dry by friction, it is a friction between the grains themselves. It removes 95% of the saponin. The second part is a very fast wash, less then a minute, rinse and dry at a low temperature. This second part removes the other 5% of saponin from the grains.

This process allow us to obtain a Royal Quinoa that is completely clean with 99.95% purity, free of saponin and ready to be use, no rinsing is needed.

How to Cook Royal Quinoa?

Cooking quinoa is very simple and quick! Simply rinse your quinoa to eliminate the bitter quinoa taste and then use a ratio of 1 cup of quinoa per 2 cups of liquid. You should bring the quinoa and liquid to a boil and then reduce heat to low until quinoa is tender.

Ancient History

Royal quinoa was a staple food for the Incas that dates back 3,000 years ago. It was first used for consumption in the Andean region of Bolivia, Peru and Colombia. The Incas called it the “mother grain” and would host ceremonies at the first planting of the season to show respect for all the greatness that the quinoa plant provided for them. During the European conquest, the Spanish colonist disparaged Royal quinoa as “food for Indians” and suppressed its cultivation. Royal quinoa flourished once again in the high mountains, over 4,000 meters over the sea level since it is one of few crops that survives high altitude, withstands frost, intense sun and the often-dry conditions that characterized the Andean climate.
